The 1980s
As in the 1970s it was the middle years of this decade that were most successful for the PSA.   In 1986-87 we won not only the Borders Semi-Junior League under the captaincy of Derek Forrest but also went on to win the Royal Bank of Scotland Youth Championship against Howe of Fife at Murrayfield.  

Eddie Gilchrist recalls, "Looking back I don't think any of us on the bus will ever forget the feeling as we pulled into Murrayfield to the sound of Hawick's Queen o' a' the Border on our tape, to get the players hyped up.   Later back in Hawick we had a great Sunday night.   I'm glad I had the Monday off".

Players of the time included Derek Turnbull, Derek Armstrong, Doug Waldie, Cameron Lyall, Glyn Davies, Mark Wright, David Blair, Scott Welsh, Keith Suddon, Craig Waldie, Warren Coltman, Mark Russell, Tom Lothian and Neil Scott.

SUMMER WINE
Every club has characters like Tom [Hinton] but few can compare to the PSA (a title which attracts questions of its origin wherever I wander).   Nowadays I think Pleasant Sunday Afternoon stands exactly for that as I often see the "Peeskie" worthies Wattie Jack, Brian Armstrong, Wull Waldie and Eddie Gilchrist walking around oor toon like something out of The Last of the Summer Wine.

THE COACH'S TALE
Ronnie [Wells] and I tried to keep things on the field simple because we had a lot of simple players in our squad:  Keith Beattie, Cameron Renwick and Grant Harris - who asked me one night when I would give the team a short penalty move that worked.   I told him that when they could do the one I gave them right, then I would give them another.
